Marcedes Lewis had a spectacular 2010 season and now he would like long-term compensation for his stellar play.

The Jacksonville Jaguars tight end, 27, had 700 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last year, both of which were career highs. He’s also a terrific blocking tight end, making him arguably the most complete position in the NFL.

He was rewarded with a franchise tag, which means he only has a one-year contract. Lewis would like a little more security than that.

"It's a catch-22, man," Lewis told ProFootballWeekly.com. "I want a long-term contract, and I know Jacksonville wants me there. I love playing in Jacksonville and who I work with there. But at the same time, who wants to play under a one-year contract? That's not cool.”

Lewis added:

"Especially when you have played five years and given your sweat, blood and tears to the team and laid it out there every Sunday, putting your body on the line. Obviously, it is what it is. I am just sitting here, being patient and trusting that we are going to get it done."

Lewis won’t get any argument from me, he deserves a lucrative contract well into his 30s.

This isn’t the case of a guy who showed out only in his contract year. He’s been a terrific blocker the past few seasons and has progressed as a pass catcher the past few years too.

Now’s he finally blossoming into the best overall tight end in the league and at 27 years old he deserves to get paid like player in his prime should.

The Jaguars run the risk of Lewis holding out and not playing with the franchise tag, but I, like Lewis, feel things will eventually get resolved.

"Jacksonville knows what (it) has in me and what kind of guy I am, my character," he said. "They know I am going to give it every day. In the meantime, I just work hard and keep a smile on my face."

It’s really a no-brainer. Lewis is a premier tight end and he should get paid like it.
