Safety Eric Weddle, who seemingly was the Jacksonville Jaguars' top free agent target, has re-signed with the San Diego Chargers, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Weddle's contract is for five years, $40 million with $19 million guaranteed. That makes him the highest-paid safety in NFL history.
The Jaguars will begin looking into Plan B, which is likely Dawan Landry (Baltimore Ravens) according to the NFL Netowrk's Jason La Canfora.
"With S Eric Weddle staying in San Diego, I see Dawan Landry in Jacksonville, a move I've long talked about. Jags shopping for safeties," La Canfora wrote via Twitter.
Jaguars 101 discussed the possibility of adding both Weddle and/or Landry this morning and it appears Landry is now Jacksonville's man. Landry has started the past six years for Baltimore and offers the ability to play free or strong safety.
Adding more than just one safety is a real possibility for the Jaguars, according to Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union. The Jaguars like young strong safety Courtney Greene but adding a proven veteran like Michael Huff or Melvin Bullitt makes sense for a team that struggled mightily against the pass last season.
Stay tuned.
