The incumbent starting quarterback hurt his back during practice this past Thursday and missed the Jaguars’ first team scrimmage on Saturday.
It looks like the injury will cause him to miss a little more time, according to Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union.
“I spoke with David Garrard today. I'll blog what he said about his progress,” Ganguli wrote on Twitter. “Don't expect him to play in New England.”
The news of Garrard missing the team’s first exhibition game comes as a bit of surprise mainly because Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio told reporters that he didn’t think the injury was a big deal last week.
But every rep counts in a shortened preseason, so it is interesting that Garrard can’t go. Is his back injury really that bad? Is it more precautionary?
Or if you believe in conspiracy theories of some sort, maybe you can buy into the notion that the team is paving the way for rookie Blaine Gabbert to get some serious playing time against a first-team defense to see if he’s ready to take over as the team’s full-time starter.
The most likely scenario is that Garrard is a little nicked up but the team is trying to test Gabbert early.
But maybe I’m reading too much into this.
Bottom line, Garrard may not go on Thursday and Gabbert will likely get a ton of snaps. Read into that as much or as little as you would like.
