Jacksonville Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith must have been seriously hitting the books today. The Jaguars have traded for 25-year old safety/CB hybrid, Dwight Lowery in return for a conditional draft pick. Lowery is expected to play at free safety for the Jaguars. In 2010, he had two sacks, three INTs (2 of which went for a TD), and seven passes defensed.
Lowery's addition to the Jaguars roster fills a hole at safety and further solidifies the secondary. If only the Jaguars defense can get that pass rush fixed, the Jaguars defense could become a dominant unit . Another fact to point out is that Lowery is on the final year of his rookie contract, which means that the Jaguars are in a lower risk situation. If Lowery pans out, the Jags will have their answer at safety. If not, the Jags could just let him go, only paying him peanuts, while giving Chris Prosinski more time to develop. It is a smart move, and I hope that it results in less mediocre QBs looking like All-Pros against the Jaguars secondary.
