There are a bunch of free agents this year for the Jaguars and Tania Ganguli has reported that GM Gene Smith is planning to keep at least 4 impending free agents: defensive end Jeremy Mincey, kicker Josh Scobee, Safety Dwight Lowery, and cornerback Rashean Mathis. The three defensive players lplayed huge role in reinvigorating a porous defense. Mincey was a constant pass rushing force, Dwight Lowery was the best ballhawk safety that I've seen in a Jaguar uniform since Reggie Nelson in his rookie year, and Rashean Mathis had his best season since 2007.
Contract talks with Josh Scobee have already begun, although there seems to be a significant gap in terms of negotiations. It shouldn't persist for too long, though. The most interesting situation is that of Rashean Mathis, who had a very good year, but he sustained an ACL injury, ending his season early. Normally, this wouldn't be too bad, but he is also turning 32, which can make things very complicated, as we have seen with Aaron Kampman. So if contract talks drag on, the Jaguars might look at another free agent corner, such as Brandon Carr or Brent Grimes.Tags: Aaron Kampman, Brandon Carr, Brent Grimes, Dwight Lowery, Football, Gene Smith, Jacksonville, Jacksonville Jaguars, Jaguars, Jeremy Mincey, Josh Scobee, NFL, Rashean Mathis
