Height: 6-4

Weight: 261

Draft Stock: Mercilus will not fall past the Detroit Lions at  # 23 overall.

Overview

Whitney Mercilus is an outstanding defensive end from the University of Illinois who racked up 16 sacks 2011, leading the country in that category. He is a bit undersized, but he has the skillset to be successful at the next level. He only had one spectacular year, but I don't think that it will matter too much. However, we'll get further into those skills on the video.

Career Highlight

9 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble against Ohio State. He can probably play at RDE in this league. He has enough speed to get around defenders and he can hold and shed blocks and his arms are long enough to corral runners off of blocks. He doesn't really use his hands enough has a rusher, but he can fight through double teams. He seems to cause a great deal of penetration and disruption in the backfield, even against the run. Whoever selects Mercilus should hope that this year was not a fluke because he looks like the real deal.
